About our journey into Urban Farming

Years back, our farm in Barcelona started to inspire others. What was initiated as a local farming research project in 2012, blossomed into a full-scale business.

Besides farming ourselves, we began to help and teach people from Europe to North and South America, to Afrika. Soon after, we also started to build our in-house developed cultivation systems for other farms. Supplying our growing trays and cups, our substrate, our organic seeds, and more ….

Now, we entirely dedicate ourselves to helping enthusiastic entrepreneurs all over the world to set up and run their own local thriving microgreen businesses.

And we love spreading the local farming movement, globally!

InstaGreenHouse growing space with multiple cultivation systems

    Frequently Asked Questions:

    You will need:

    • A hygienic space to grow where you can control the climate. A room of 12 – 15 m2 can already be enough to get started on a small scale. More ideal would be a 30 – 40 m2 room or larger, depending on your market and ambition to grow.
    • To create the right climate, you need a dehumidifier and, fans for airflow. Depending on your local weather, you need an air conditioner and/or heater.
    • Tables for seeding and packing,
    • A sink and water hose.
    • Storage place for your seeds and other materials.
    • Also don’t forget the sales and the logistics part of your business. You most likely need a cargo bike or (electric) car/van to get your delicious greens to your clients.

We made a little tool for you to design your own farm and make a list of the things you still need to do or buy.
You can download the tool here.

That depends on the size of farm you want to build. Typically this can range from 6.500 – 30.000 euro for professional local farms.

Besides the packages we offer for your training, cultivation systems and growing materials, you also need to prepare the room where you are going to grow.

The costs for this can vary a lot, depending on the size of your farm and what needs to be done to make that a space where you can work hygienically and control the climate.

When possible, we highly recommend investing in the proper insulation of your room. You will then spend a lot less energy and money on the climatization of your indoor farm.
You may also need to buy a means of transport to bring your products to your clients.

We made a little tool for you to design your own farm and make a list of the things you still need to do or buy.
You can download the tool here.

When you have finished our training you can hit the ground running, instead of spending valuable time inventing the wheel by yourself. You reduce your learning runway by at least half a year.

As soon as you have finished your growing room and set up your first systems you can already start handing out samples to potential clients the week after

When you make use of our cultivation systems, you save a lot of time on the farming part of your business. For your business, you then mainly need to take care off seeding and watering your germinating seeds, little daily maintenance, (new) client contact, preparing the orders for your clients, and the logistics part of your business. Especially the time needed for the logistics varies highly per location (type of clients, size of orders, distance between clients, means of transport).

To give you an estimation of the time needed for the farming part: when you have 2 cultivation systems and 1 germination rack and you produce approximately 1000 cups per week, you need to reserve approximately 10 hours per week to grow these. And say another approx. 10 hours to prepare all the orders for your clients. Plus the time to deliver your products to your local clients.

As with many questions, the answer is: “that depends….”.
It depends on: where you are located, the size of your community, the number of potential clients in that area, how active and effective you go after those potential clients, your competition and the amount of m2 cultivation space you have, to name a few important factors.

There are people who support themselves with their farm, others who do this besides another paid job, and again others who hired a few additional people to help them for instance with the farming, the logistics and client contact.

To give you some input so that you can make your own calculations: with a Farm Starter Kit with 2 system of 12 trays each you have 14,5 m2 cultivation area. This equals 960 of our cups. In the germination rack with 24 trays as included in the pack, you have space for another 960 cups. 29 m2 growing area in total: space for 1920 cups. Keep in mind though that you will not use all this space at all times.
Most microgreens take only 1 to 2 weeks to grow. We sell these cups in Barcelona for 3 euro each.

You really do not need much space to start a local microgreen farm. One of the many benefits of micro-greens and vertical farming combined.
While some prefer to start big from the beginning, you can also start a farm in a spare room or your garage. The size of your farm mainly depends on your local market, your own farming ambitions and the space you might have available to start with (and grow bigger bit by bit).
In any case, when you want to begin a professional farm, make sure you have a closed off space where you can work hygienically and can control the climate.

No, with InstaGreen you are free to run your farm the way you want, and we do not ask you to sign a contract with us.
