About our journey into Urban Farming

Years back, our microgreen farm in Barcelona started to inspire others. What was initiated as a local farming research project in 2012, had blossomed into a full-scale successful business.

Besides farming ourselves, we then started to help and teach people from Europe to Africa, and from South to North America. Soon after, we also started to build our in-house developed cultivation systems for other farmers. Supplying our growing trays and cups, our substrate, organic seeds, and more ….

Now, we completely dedicate ourselves to personally help enthusiastic entrepreneurs all over the world to set up and run their own local thriving microgreen businesses. Some of these farms are now bigger than we ever were. Others grow crops we never grew. And we’re loving it!

We are here to also help you create the life you want and spreading the sustainable local farming movement!

InstaGreenHouse growing space with multiple cultivation systems

    Frequently Asked Questions:

With the kit you got yourself the most essential parts to start a microgreen farm. You will furthermore need:

    • A hygienic space to grow. A room of 12 – 15 m2 can already be enough to get started on a small scale. Depending on your local market and ambitions to grow you might want a 30 – 40 m2 room or even larger.
    • To create the right climate, you need a dehumidifier and, fans for airflow. Depending on your local weather, you may need an air conditioner and/or heater.
    • Tables for seeding and packing.
    • Ideally you have a sink and/or water hose inside or nearby your grow room.
    • Storage place for your seeds, cups, substrate and other materials.
    • Also don’t forget the sales and the logistics part of your business. You need some form of transportation to get your delicious greens to your clients.

We made a little tool for you to design your own farm and make a list for yourself of the things you still need to do or buy.
Mail us at hello@instagreen.eu if you would like us to send you this

You really do not need much space to start a local microgreen farm, a spare room or garage with 12 – 15 m2 free space can already be enough to start (and grow bigger bit by bit with the profit you make). One of the many benefits of micro-greens and vertical farming combined :)
That said, some people prefer to only build a farm once, and start off with a larger space from the beginning, e.g. a 30-40 m2 grow room.

The size of your farm mainly depends on your local market, your own farming ambitions and the time, space and other resources you have available to start with.

In any case, when you build a professional farm, make sure you have a closed off space where you can work hygienically and can control the climate.

The costs depend off course on the size of farm you want to build and what needs to be done to make that a space where you can work hygienically and control the climate. This can range from 3.000 – 30.000 euro for small to medium sized farms.

When possible, we highly recommend investing in the proper insulation of your room. You will then spend a lot less energy and money on the climatization of your indoor farm.

When you have done the training you can hit the ground running and grow like a pro! No need to spend valuable time inventing the wheel by yourself and making mistakes. We mentor you as you start your business.

So as soon as you have finished setting up your grow room and your systems, you can already start handing out samples to potential clients the week after.

With these automated cultivation systems, you save a lot of time on the otherwise labor intensive farming parts of this business.

In your farm you mainly need to take care off seeding and watering your germinating seeds, little daily maintenance, marketing, sales & client contact, preparing the orders for your clients, and the logistics part of your business. Especially the time needed for the logistics varies highly per location (type of clients, size of orders, distance between clients, means of transport, etc).

To give you an estimation of the time needed for the farming part: when you produce approximately 1000 cups of microgreens / week, you need to reserve approximately 10 hours / week to grow these. And say another 10 hours for the clients contact and to prepare all the orders for your clients. Plus the time to deliver your fresh greens to your local clients.

While others might promise you mountains of gold without much effort…. we give honest answers. And as with many questions, the answer is: “It depends….”.

It depends on: where you are located, the size of your community, the number of potential clients in that area, how active and effective you go after those potential clients, your competition and the amount of m2 cultivation space you have, to name a few important factors.

There are people who support themselves and their family with their farm, some who start their business alongside another job before they can live from it, and others who have a whole team of people working in their farm, the logistics, sales and client contact.

To give you some input “to do the math” and make your own calculations: with a Farm Starter Kit of 2 system of 12 trays each you have 14,5 m2 cultivation area. This equals 960 of our cups. In the germination rack with 24 trays as included in the pack, you have space for another 960 cups. 29 m2 growing area in total = space for 1920 cups.
Most microgreens take only 1 – 2 weeks to grow. We sell these in Barcelona for 3 euro / cup. (Keep in mind though that you will not use every m2 of space at all times.)

Nope! And this has been a very conscious decision. At InstaGreen we want you to be free to build and run your farm the way you want!

It is our aim to make sure you get all the knowledge and skills you need to build your own farm and grow your business with success. We want to help you build the life you want to live, using all our experience starting businesses and running this type of farm.

We will never oblige you to do things our way, or to only do business with us. We will therefore also not ask you to sign any contract with us. You are free to run your company the way you like!
